Welcome
Fayette County occupies 704 square miles, or 450,560 acres and is in the southwestern part of Tennessee. It extends about 28 miles from north to south and about 25 miles from east to west. According to the 2000 census the county has 28,806 residents. The county seat Somerville, 26 miles east of Memphis, has 2800 residents. Fayette County consists of nine small incorporated cities - Somerville, Pipterton, Hickory Withe, Moscow, Oakland, LaGrange, Braden and Gallaway. The L&N railroad crosses the northern section, the Southern RR extends completely across the lower southern portion and the IC RR cuts across the southeast corner. Interstate 40 crosses the country at Longtown and US Hwy 64 bisects the county from east to west. Highway 76/59 bisects the county from north to south also through Somerville. Fayette is largely a rural farming county with the main crops being cotton, soybeans, and corn and primary livestock being cattle and hogs. The county is well suited to agriculture, we have a growing season of 200 days and an average precipitation of approximately 50 inches. The average altitude is about 400 feet above sea level, ranging from 270 feet in the northwest corner near Gallaway to 600 feet in the southeast corner at LaGrange.
